Human Services Majors

New preferential value for our students with Cabrillo Human Services Certificates.

Over the past year, the Cabrillo Human Services (HSERV) Program faculty has been working closely with the county Mental Health Agency in their planning and implementation of the Mental Health Services Act and specifically, the Workforce Education and Training component. Patrick Meyer, HServ PC, was informed that County Personnel will now assign our Human Services Certificates an extra point value when evaluating applications for entry level positions in Mental Health. This means that when a current or former student with certificate(s) applies for a position, their education will be given a preferential value compared to other applicants. Congratulations to Patrick and the HServ faculty and students!

Nursing Student Summer Work Experience Program

This summer 19 of our nursing students were involved in the WEX (work experience) Program. They had finished their first year of the nursing program here at Cabrillo and were able to apply what they have learned and gain hands on working experience. Funding was provided by WIA/WIB, Fast Track To Work and stimulus money.

As a result of this and other programs, we have received various donations that support our students in all of our Fast Track To Work programs. Catherine Lachance and the Fast Track To Work staff sincerely appreciates these donations! THANK YOU!

Getting Ready for Fall Semester

Student traffic in our office will get quite heavy starting when fall books go on sale August 17th through about September 18th. Fast Track staff will be busy helping students with book vouchers, counseling appointments and various questions. Therefore, if you need assistance with OTHER items, please wait until after September 18th to come into our office for help with those items. Thank you for your understanding!

Fall Books for CalWORKs and WIA Students

When you come to our office to get your book voucher, you will have to look up your books online. Because we only have two student computers here in our office, you may have to wait a bit. To save yourself some time, you may look up your text books before you come in. Go to the text book lookup page on the bookstore website.

Find all your classes/sections, then click on "Find books for these courses". Print this list out and bring it to the FTTW office. At our office you can use this list to fill out your voucher for your required books.

Dena Taylor has Retired!

We want to let you know of a change in staff at our office. Our wonderful Program Manager, Dena Taylor, has retired as of June 30th. We are sad for us but very excited for her. She will now have more time to devote to her many passions.

We are very excited that our own Catherine Lachance will be taking over Dena's job of running Fast Track. In this new position, she will still be available to meet with students and troubleshoot problems.

Student Health Center Changes for WIA Students

Starting Monday, June 29th, services you receive at the Student Health Center will have to be paid by you at the time of service. They only accept checks or cash (no credit cards). They will give you a receipt (a walkout statement) which you will submit to Fast Track To Work to be reimbursed by the county.

If you pay with a check, you will need to submit a copy of the front and back of the cleared check along with the Health Center statement and the reimbursement form.

If you pay with cash, the Health Center statement will state that you paid with cash so you only need to submit it with the reimbursement form.

The reimbursement forms are available at the front desk at our office.

WIA Career Scholarships

NOTE: 5/13/10 - The funding for new scholarships is currently on hold. Check back with the office after July 1, 2010.

Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of Santa Cruz County is currently recruiting full-time students interested in pursuing a Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway in labor market demand. This scholarship opportunity may award students up to $6,000, varying amounts depending on individual program costs. WIA funds CTE certificates for one year and most allied health programs for two years. Students are assisted with books, transportation, class fees, vouchers, and more. The program's success is measured by student success: in job acquisition, their ability to stay employed, and in the increase of an individual’s income.

Please come by the Fast Track Office (room 802) to sign up for a new streamlined version of the WIA orientation for quicker access to this amazing scholarship opportunity. You will need to complete a pre packet that will allow you entry at the orientation. If you have any questions, please call Noemi Gonzalez at (831) 479-5707. Thank you and good luck!
