Family Planning & Reproductive Health Clinic

Student Health Services is pleased to announce a new service available to our students. Santa Cruz Women's Health Center will come to the Health Center every Friday afternoon to provide family planning and reproductive health services to our students. Many of these services are available during regular clinic hours, but the advantage of coming during the Family Planning Clinic is that the students can be certified for Family Pact, a state funding program that pays for family planning services. A typical visit with lab work that would cost upwards of $350 at a doctors office, or $35 at the Health Center, could be free of cost to qualifying students.

Textbooks at the Library

A copy of all textbooks from the most expensive down to $50 is on a 2-hour reserve in the library and in the ILC at the Watsonville Center. If these books are checked out in the last 2 hours of the day, they can be used over night. This is a good option for the non-required books that Fast Track To Work programs do not purchase.

State Budget - CalWORKs Cuts

Senate Budget Hearing
This afternoon the Senate Budget Committee held a hearing in Sacramento to consider the Governor’s plan to cut CalWORKs grant by nearly 16% - which will reduce family’s cash benefits by about $90-120 a month.

The Governor has also threatened to eliminate the CalWORKs program completely, if policymakers in Washington, D.C. don’t give California more of the tax dollars that the state pays to the federal government.

Jennifer Troia, a consultant for the Senate Budget Committee, says it is “utterly important” to hear from many voices of the people affected by these cuts. We need all parents to represent! Call the Senate Budget Committee at 916 651-4103 and tell them how the CalWORKs cuts will affect your family.

Assembly Budget Hearing
In addition, this week the Assembly Budget Committee will also be holding a hearing on Wednesday, February 3rd on the state budget and will be considering the proposed cuts to CalWORKs and other safety net programs. The only way to stop these cuts is if the legislators hear from the families who will be hurt by these cuts – so we need parents and children to represent!

If you can attend this important hearing, LIFETIME staff be leaving Oakland at 8am and will be back by 5 or 6pm. As always, children are welcome to come to both hearings, and lunch will be provided.

Even if you can’t attend, you can still make sure that your voice is heard – call the Assembly Budget Committee at 916-319-2099 and ask them to protect CalWORKs!

Take a stand - don’t let the Governor balance the state budget on the backs of poor children!

Yours in justice,
Diana Spatz, Executive Director
